Liberation Day 80th Anniversary

The 80th anniversary of Guernsey's Liberation Day on May 9th, 2025, was a truly memorable and deeply significant occasion, marked by heartfelt commemorations and vibrant celebrations across the island. Islanders and visitors alike came together to remember the past, celebrate freedom, and embrace the strong community spirit of Guernsey.  

The day unfolded with a series of impactful events, including:

The Liberation Day Cavalcade: The streets of St. Peter Port came alive with the traditional cavalcade. Decorated floats, vintage military vehicles, enthusiastic community groups, and talented local performers created a colourful and moving spectacle that captivated all who watched.

A Commemorative Service: A solemn and respectful commemorative service was held, bringing together dignitaries, veterans, and the community for a moment of reflection and remembrance. Wreaths were laid to honour those who endured the occupation and those who fought for liberation.  

Live Music and Entertainment: From morning till evening, Guernsey resonated with the sounds of celebration. Live music performances across various venues showcased local talent and special guest artists, creating a lively and festive atmosphere.

Family Fun and Engaging Activities: Throughout the day, families enjoyed a wide array of activities. Funfairs buzzed with excitement, children were delighted by entertainers, and interactive displays offered insights into Guernsey's history and heritage. Craft stalls showcased local artistry and provided unique souvenirs.

A Taste of Guernsey: Food and Drink: Numerous food and drink stalls offered a delicious array of local and international cuisine. Attendees savoured the flavours of the island, adding to the festive atmosphere.  

The Grand Finale: A Breathtaking Fireworks Display: As dusk fell, the skies above the harbour erupted in a stunning fireworks display. The dazzling spectacle provided a perfect and poignant end to a day of remembrance and celebration.

The 80th anniversary of Liberation Day was a resounding success, a testament to the enduring spirit and unity of the people of Guernsey.
